About
A Note from Current Residents:
Hi, everyone! If you are looking for a great place to live on the water with excellent proximity to campus and great people, Baker is the place for you! A diverse community, with many athletes and scholars from around the world, Baker is a place where everyone becomes comfortable with everyone. The social spaces are always used to hang out and study, and the rooms are nice and open to everyone. Baker also has a great dining hall right downstairs that attracts students from other dorms to come and eat. Every room has a sink, which proves incredibly useful, and comes with nice furniture and oftentimes couches. The Baker residents are known for being very social and friendly, and so Baker tends to become a place to congregate on the weekends to hang out, or on weekdays to work in the lounges! Overall, Baker is a great community where you can meet great people, make great friends, and have a ton of fun while making your way through an awesome time here at MIT!
Dining Info
Baker House is one of six in-house dining communities and residents are required to enroll in a minimum meal plan based upon class year. MIT Dining partners with Bon Appétit to provide an all-you-care-to-eat option within the residential dining hall. Please see the MIT Dining website for additional details. All students are encouraged to consider their meal plan options when choosing their housing preferences.
Room Assignments
A unique feature of MIT’s residential system is that student Room Assignment Chairs or "RACs" coordinate individual room assignments in each building along with members of their House Team. Each house approaches room assignments a bit differently but all follow these principles:
- New student preferences will be used to make room assignments.
- Upper-level students will not preference or select students to live on their floors/entry/community.
- First-year students may opt out of exploration and are not required to move.
After REX, incoming first-years living in Baker gather at a designated time and are encouraged to find people who share a similar sleep schedule and noisiness preference. If students determine they would like to group together, they submit assignment sheets together for placement by RACs. If a resident wishes to switch to a different room, RACs will place students based on medical needs and what they have requested.
